What is silver?

Silver is a soft and white costly metal that isn't as rare as gold; it is also a very malleable and ductile metal, one of the first metals to be used by humans. It can be transformed into sheets so thin that light will shine trough them. It can also be drawn into wire that is finer than human hair.
Silver can be mined in Canada, Norway, Mexico, Chile, Australia, Colorado and some other regions. The largest blocks come from Aspen, Colorado but the biggest producer in quantity is the Guanajuato mine in Mexico.
Silver has the highest thermal and electrical conductivity of all metals. Unlike gold, it is soluble in nitric acid and it tarnishes over time when exposed to environmental contaminants such as ozone or hydrogen sulphide.
Silver as a metal has unique antibacterial properties. The health care business consumes silver in many products. It is also heavily used in jewellery, coinage, mirrors, ornamentations and electrically conductive paint.
Back to when money was backed by costly metal, practically every country in the world using the coinage principles made their coins with a unavoidable content level of silver. The use of silver for monetary change can be traced as far back to 700 years Bc. The Roman Army was paid with silver.
